In line with decarbonization trends, Indonesia has set a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89% by 2030 (43.2% with international support). It has also stated that it will achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 while remaining highly dependent on natural resources — especially fossil fuels, such as oil and natural gas. Under these circumstances, Indonesia has recently launched and is attempting to introduce various policies to decarbonize its economy. In addition, the country has been working on and promoting CCUS, a technology that can be used to both increase oil and gas production and reduce CO2 emissions.

On March 3 this year, the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) enacted the Regulation on the Implementation of CCS and CCUS in Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (MEMR2/2023).
