Stephen McCann is a member of the Finance & Projects Group at Baker McKenzie’s Tokyo office.
He has extensive experience supporting clients in Asia on large-scale projects and transactions in the energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors throughout the world.
Stephen has been based in Tokyo for more than eight years, including a three-year secondment to a major Japanese power utility and two separate secondments supporting major Japanese trading companies. After four years with another large international law firm in Tokyo, Stephen rejoined Baker McKenzie in 2025.

Practice Focus

Stephen’s core practice covers mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, project development, construction, offtake agreements, and commodity sales. He primarily supports Japanese clients in the energy (both conventional and renewable), oil & gas (including LNG), mining, and infrastructure sectors. This also includes experience supporting clients on decarbonisation projects (including CCS) and the production and procurement of sustainable fuels (including hydrogen and ammonia).

  • Supported a major Japanese trading company on its acquisition of interests in Malaysia LNG liquefaction projects.
  • Supported Tokyo Gas on its investment in and formation of a joint venture in Japan with Octopus Energy, a British renewable energy supplier.
  • Supported a major Japanese trading company on its joint venture to develop selected offshore wind opportunities in Japan.
  • Supported a major energy company on the development of an LNG receiving terminal in the Philippines, including the terminal use and capacity, joint venture and LNG supply and gas sale arrangements.
  • Supported several Japanese trading and utility companies on the acquisition and divestment of interests in significant mining projects around the world and on the offtake arrangements for said projects.
  • Supported a Japanese trading company on its successful bid to develop one of the world’s largest floating offshore wind projects in Scotland.
  • Supported a Japanese electric utility on its funding of a carbon capture and storage project to be developed in Queensland, Australia.
  • Supported a Japanese trading company on its proposed investment into and joint development of an approximately 600 MW green hydrogen and ammonia production project in Europe.
  • Supported a Japanese electric utility on its long-term procurement of LNG supplies from the US.
  • Supported several Japanese companies on investments in upstream oil and gas projects in Australia and Asia.
