About

Today’s rapidly evolving technologies have made it easier than ever for companies to collect, use and transfer data throughout the world. The regulation of data has expanded, imposing complex and often inconsistent privacy and data protection standards. At the same time, the legal and business risks associated with non-compliance have escalated.

We advise Japanese and multinational companies on all aspects of data privacy, security and information management both within Japan and abroad.

We have substantial experience in creating and implementing global intra-group privacy agreements and in advising companies on internal and external system management. We also advise on the handling of customer and employee data as well as patient data for clients in the healthcare and medical device industries.

Representative Experience

  • Assisted a global Japan-based pharmaceutical company with the development and implementation of a global intra-group privacy agreement.
  • Advised a Japanese electronics company on compliance with privacy laws in multiple jurisdictions relating to its new IoT device, and on drafting privacy and cookie policies.
  • Advised on legal issues related to forensic analysis (inspecting employees’ e-mails and data during a corporate fraud investigation).
  • Represented the client in a privacy suit against a UK web server management company that allegedly disclosed confidential information obtained through hacked e-mails. Our successful negotiations resulted in the suspension of the web server management company’s site operations.
