We also routinely work together with lawyers from other Baker McKenzie practice groups on domestic litigation matters involving M&A and other corporate law, intellectual property, labor/employment, insolvency, environmental issues and tax.

Representative Experience

  • Represented the Japanese subsidiary of a major American investment bank in a lawsuit in Tokyo District Court involving approximately JPY1 billion in relation to alleged misrepresentation and fraud with respect to the sale of certain structured investment products.
  • Represented a listed Japanese chemical company in a product liability case in Japanese court.
  • Represented and helped Japanese IT companies settle various domestic product liability cases.
  • Represented a Japanese chemical manufacturer in a JPY1 billion tax recovery claim against the Japanese National Tax Administration with respect to the treatment of carried-over losses in a corporate group reorganization.
  • Defended a Japanese construction and demolition waste company against pollution claims brought by Japanese parties.
  • Defended a Japanese magazine publisher and settled various liquidation claims brought against it by various domestic creditors.
  • Defended a Japanese regional bank in a JPY 1.1-billion damage claim filed by another domestic regional bank for alleged breach of contract arising from the breakup of a merger negotiation and differences over share valuation methods.
  • Represented a major American bank in relation to several civil arbitration court (minjichotei) matters, including the closing of their private bank, with a total settlement amount of USD200 million.
