We have played an important role in the development of the project finance market in Japan. We acted on the first project financing in Japan in 1999 and have since acted on various project financings, including more than 3,500 MW of projects in the energy sector, covering IPP, solar and wind power generation, waste combustion facilities, biomass , geothermal and small hydro power plants. We have also advised on more than 200 PFI/PPP transactions in Japan concerning assets as diverse as airports, toll roads, MICE facilities, water supply facilities, sewer facilities, hospitals, leisure facilities, waste incinerators, swimming pools, schools, government buildings, parliament member office buildings, embassies, art galleries, aquariums, school lunch facilities and prisons.

Representative Experience

  • Advised Japanese sponsors and lenders on the project financing of more than 1,000 MW of advanced coal fired power stations and more than 1,000 MW of LNG power stations throughout Japan.
  • Advised Japanese and international sponsors and lenders on the project financing of more than 1,500 MW of solar power generation projects throughout Japan.
  • Advised a consortium of Japanese companies led by a construction and engineering company on the Aichi Prefecture Toll Road PPP Concession.
  • Advised the lenders on the USD1 billion project financing of the Universal Studios Japan theme park in Osaka, Japan.
  • Advised lenders and sponsors on the project financing of seven wind power plants in Japan.
  • Advised a Japanese sponsor and local project company in connection with the USD373 million project financing of a steel plant in Bahrain.
