Our origins date back to 1972, when the Tokyo Aoyama Law Office was first established as an associated office of Baker &McKenzie in Japan. In 1995, we officially established a separate Baker McKenzie, Attorney at Foreign Law office, after domestic legal changes allowed for foreign lawyers to operate in the jurisdiction.
In May 2001, the Tokyo Aoyama Law Office successfully merged with Aoki & Partners (founded in 1897) to deeply enhance the capital markets and corporate finance practice.
Following the amendment of the Japanese Lawyer’s Law on April 1, 2005, the Tokyo Aoyama Aoki Law Office and the Baker & McKenzie, Attorney at Foreign Law Office officially conjoined to operate as a single integrated partnership.
In April 2007, the Firm merged again with a team of prominent Japanese and foreign partners led by Fumio Koma, strategically enhancing our capabilities within the Antitrust, Corporate/M&A, IP/IT and Insolvency groups. Our European practice was also enhanced through the creation of one of the largest teams of European-qualified lawyers operating directly out of Japan.
In September 2012, the firm changed its registered firm name to Baker & McKenzie (Gaikokuho Joint Enterprise) and relocated to the Ark Hills Sengokuyama Mori Tower, located in Roppongi 1-chome.
